Botox
The Association of Professional Aestheticians of Australia acknowledges that the use of Botox as a treatment is not a practice undertaken by a beauty therapist but rather by plastic and cosmetic surgeons. However we are happy to prove you with the following information on the procedure.
Botox is a purified, processed from of botulinum toxin type A. Botox is currently being used for treatment of various eyelid spasms and muscle related tics. Recently however, Botox has been used for cosmetic purposes although approval has not yet been granted for use in this area. Botox can be injected into individual muscles to paralyse and decrease the activity of the muscle. By doing this, the area relaxes and the lines become less obvious. With repeated treatments lines are prevented from developing further and the muscles are said to wither and atrophy because they are not being used. This however can take several years of Botox injections for it to occur.
The injection of Botox is relatively painless, and treatment is quick, with no need for local anaesthetic or hospitalisation. In many cases it is far less expensive than surgical alternatives. It should be stressed that the results of Botox are not permanent but do last several months.
Complications associated with the injection of Botox are few, with temporary drooping of the eyelids which can last several weeks being the most severe problem that may occur. Nausea and a headache can also occur after injection. Your plastic surgeon can explain these complications further during consultation.
No fasting is required on the day of treatment. You are required to remain in an upright position for four hours post injection. Ice can be applied if small bruises appear at puncture sites. These can be covered easily with makeup. Botox does take a week to paralyse the muscles fully.
