Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a procedure that is available through appropriately qualified Professional Beauty Therapists. Microdermabrasion technology produces efficacious results in removing dead skin cells in a safe, controlled and painless procedure. As the name suggests microdermabrasion enables the practitioner to achieve finer dead skin removal and better treatment of the common problems of acne scars, fine lines and aging skin.
The simplest way to describe the technology is that it carries away the epidermal skin layers and enables the skin to naturally rebuild itself in a different way. It offers high and precise exfoliation of the skin where the user of the machine can control the depth, layer by layer.
There are currently two categories of equipment that deliver this procedure. One is designed to be used by qualified beauty therapists and a second model that allows a deeper exfoliation procedure is designed to be used by the medical profession only. However, both work on the same principles - a fine jet of inert minute crystals is blown onto the skin's surface. The force of the medical-grade crystals being blown through the tube onto the skin creates an exfoliating action stripping away dead cells on the epidermis. Once the crystals hit the skin they are sucked up via a tube through the other side of the device to avoid contamination. The process eases fine lines and wrinkles and evens skin texture on granular skins. It is also highly effective on blackheads and comedones, enlarged pores; surgical scars, minor acne scars and narrow stretchmarks. The result is a fresher, smoother looking skin.
The major difference between the Beauty Therapy unit and the Cosmetic Physician unit is the addition of a foot switch to the latter unit. This switch enables doctors to increase the power of the unit up to four times for faster delivery of the crystals to the dermis for deep medical dermabrasion.
If you are considering this procedure we recommend that you request evidence that the practitioner has been trained by the supplier according to the manufacturer's standards as a minimum qualification requirements, as devices differ in their performance. If the practitioner can also show evidence of completing an advanced course in microdermabrasion techniques this is also highly recommended.
